About Ashdod

Ashdod, Israel’s fifth largest city and main port, sits on the Mediterranean coast 20 miles south of Tel Aviv. Ashdod’s population represents a mosaic of Israel: namely Jewish immigrants from Morocco, Egypt, Romania, Georgia, Former Soviet Union, Ethiopia, France and Argentina. The city boasts a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

A vibrant beach city, Ashdod is home to a variety of cultural attractions, including a free zoo, art museums, MonArt performing arts center, the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra and more.

Ashdod also has multiple shopping centers with supermarkets, fresh fruit, vegetable and fish markets, banks, money exchange depots, pharmacies, eateries, and doctors just around the corner. Down at the pier, there are restaurants, bars, lounges and clubs to frequent on weekends and evenings. There is even a bike shop in Ashdod where you can buy a bike and sell it back at the end of the year. Ashdod also has a great bus system operating within the city, as well as intercity transport offering easy access to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

In the classroom

Classroom sizes in Ashdod range from 20-30 students. Most of your time will be dedicated to working with smaller groups of 3-5 students on a variety of activities and lessons.

Only 55% of Ashdod’s senior high school students graduate with a Bagrut matriculation certificate (a certificate that is required to continue to higher education). Over the school year, you’ll become a teacher, mentor and role model for the children of Ashdod.

Where you’ll live

Fellows in Ashdod live in Israeli apartments in various locations in the city. The apartments are furnished, have WiFi internet service, basic kitchen utensils and cookware, and each bedroom is equipped with two single/twin beds. Fellows live in Israeli neighborhoods and experience life as a local, learning in your 10-month program what real life is like as a member of your local community.
